Shabbat Starts Here

Friday, October 6, 2017 16 Tishrei 5778

5:45 PM - 8:00 PM

“Shabbat Starts Here” is our newest opportunity to welcome to Beth El members from every age group to help celebrate Shabbat. On the first Friday evening of every month between October and May, we offer three different worship and program components, and you can come to one, two, or all three. The point is simply to acknowledge that Shabbat begins with many different opportunities for our observance, and we hope you will find the one best suited to you!
Nosh at 5:45 pm – Our Pre-neg Shabbat is a time for relieving a bit of hunger before dinner, and for schmoozing with friends at the end of a hectic week!

Worship at 6:00 pm – A Shabbat Shalom Friday evening service, fit for all members of our TBE family. (Hint: If you like our morning Family Services on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, you will find our new Friday evening service very familiar, as well as warm and welcoming!) Our Shabbat Shalom service will include songs, prayers, stories, and love. Adults, bring your children or come alone! Kids, bring your parents, and grandparents. Let everyone know that Shabbat Starts Here!

Eat at 6:45 pm – Next, we’ll enjoy a Congregational Shabbat Dinner! You can register for this convenient and welcoming dinner at below. Dinner is either baked chicken or macaroni and cheese with a side of vegetables. $15 for adults age 13 and over and $10 for youth 12 and under.

At 7:45 pm, our evening continues with special cultural programs presented by members of our professional staff and/or committees of TBE. Our first program will be a screening of the 2007 Academy Award™-winning Best Live Action Short Film, “West Bank Story,” a 21-minute long musical comedy set in the fast-paced, fast-food world of competing falafel stands on the West Bank in Israel/Palestine. We’ll follow the film’s screening with a discussion of the current situation in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

A description of “West Bank Story”: David, an Israeli soldier, falls in love with Fatima, a beautiful Palestinian cashier, despite the animosity between their families' dueling restaurants. Can the couple's love withstand a 70-year-old conflict and their families' desire to control the future of the chick pea in the Middle East?

Please register for dinner by Friday, September 29.
